Our daughter Amina is 2 years old and was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP) at 6 months. Since then she has been receiving the traditional mix of physical, occupational, and speech therapies recommended by most doctors in the US for children with CP. While this regime-one hour sessions of each therapy once a week-has helped Amina learn how to eat better and reduce her tone, what we read about the International Clinic of Rehabilitation encouraged us to try it out.
Prior to going to Ukraine, Amina was not able to sit or walk and rarely used her left arm. Immediately after completing the two-week course at the Clinic, we saw marked improvement in Amina's leg strength, use of her weaker left arm, and increased drive to walk, as demonstrated by her "dancing" in place when held near the ground. While she was demonstrating some of these things prior to her treatment at the Clinic, the regiment there definitely improved her strength and reduced her tone. After returning home to the US, Amina's therapists noticed these and other changes as well: improved balance, better sitting and standing, improved chewing and swallowing.
While the results of the treatment were not dramatic-in the sense that Amina
started walking, talking or crawling-the results were significant enough to make us enthusiastic supporters of their work, and will endeavor to come again as soon as we are able. It seems to me that intensive therapy is better than the occasional sessions that we have in the US, as Amina jumped weeks or months ahead of where she probably would have been had we not gone to the Clinic.
Although the accommodations at the Clinic are excellent and the food good,
if you are fond of spicy food I would recommend brining Tabasco sauce!
